Like many other schools, Sexton has a number of students with disabilities. Many of these students spend an hour a day with Ms. Roelofs in Room 122b. Her job is to work closely with each student and prepare any work that is assigned to each student. Since each student is different, she must prepare the work accordingly. Some students need it enlarged, some need it translated into Braille, and some need it adapted in other ways. Ms. Roelofs says in order to be effective, "I must work closely with each student's teachers and get their work well in advance, to avoid any problems."

Ms. Roelof's students also work with an Orientation and Mobility specialist two or three times a week. The specialist normally works with the students at the beginning of the year and continues until the school year is over. The specialist's main job is to help the students maneuver in normal places such as the mall, grocery store, on the streets. The specialist also teaches the students how to travel on the CATA bus. "The purpose is to help the students achieve independence so they are able to work in the real world," says Ms. Roelofs.

There are many problems that the students encounter after high school. While many colleges offer programs to help students with disabilities, those who are not able to attend a college or university face under-employment. While many are able to get jobs, many jobs that are available are not worth getting. As Ms. Roelofs explains, "The problem lies in that most people are uneducated when it comes to students with these types of problems, so they don't know how to react." This can cause potential employers to shy away from these types of kids. If good employment is not available, a lot of students are placed in community service positions. The reason is to keep the students active and contributing to society.

Those students who do go on to college have expanded opportunities. There are programs at Lansing Community College and at Michigan State University, as well as many other schools. One program in particular at MSU is the Tower Guard program. In this program, as part of their graduation requirements, Honor Students read textbooks onto tape.

Through education and association, we must work toward creating an equal and fair environment for disabled students. Only after this is achieved will our society be a step closer to being ideal.

I miss watching The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show during the middle-to-late 70's with my grandfather, a.k.a. Paw-Paw. He usually laughed a lot more than I did.
